This Is Who We Are
I had an interesting chat the other day with someone who I respect immensely.
Sometimes we have conversations that can go on much longer than anticipated so we now book an extra hour in each of our calendars when we have a meeting so we can enjoy the flow of the conversation.
I have learned so much from this person about life, living and dealing with others that I feel my life is so much better for having met them.
I always learn something when we talk. And this meeting was nothing different.
We discussed the possibility of adding a new dimension to my business and that dimension being wrapped around the concept of giving back to my community. I was born and raised in Guelph. I love Guelph. I feel like my grandparents did when they talked about how small Guelph used to be, only I am a few generations ahead in the growth. But the growth of Guelph is another story.
I want to give back.
I want to partner with a community-based organization that helps people.
I want to do good.
I want to partner with a company that can help me do this.
As I had all of these thoughts going through my head (and I knew they were my thoughts because I recognized the voice) I realized that I have been partnered for many years with a few companies that can help me with this.
As you may know, one of the things I do is help protect individuals and families from some of the risks life may throw at them. I protect them from the risk of the bread winner dying too soon. I protect them from the risk of paying too much taxes throughout their lifetime. I protect them from losing their greatest asset-the ability to earn a living.
I have many partners who help me with this.
One of these partners has exclusive membership benefits which includes up to 250 scholarships, grants to community projects (which are available through a simple application process), Family Fun Events that help member families take a break from busy schedules (at no cost) with a visit to a local attraction, theme parks and sporting events. They have provided millions of dollars in disaster relief and community grants. They have built playgrounds from the ground up. They believe in making a positive impact in the lives of others, all as a fraternal organization that gives back to the communities they belong to.
Another of our partners has just become ‘B Corp’ certified. What is a ‘B Corp’ business? It is a business that meets the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability to balance profit and purpose. They are accelerating a global culture shift to redefine success in business and build a more inclusive and sustainable economy.
What more could we want in a partner? Giving back to the local community and giving back to the global community. This is who we are. This is what we do.
